Barre Classes in Stockton Heath
Ballet-inspired, low-impact strength for every level – no dance experience needed
Long, lean strength, a serious burn in the legs and glutes, and a class you'll actually look forward to. Barre at Z runs for adults and, on Thursdays, as Mini & Me Barre for parents with toddlers.
What is Barre?
Barre is a low-impact workout that blends ballet-inspired positions with Pilates-style core work and strength training. Classes use a barre or other support, and are built around small, controlled, high-repetition movements – tiny pulses, holds and lifts that make your muscles burn without any jumping or heavy lifting.
Don't let the ballet bit put you off. There's no choreography, no tutus and no dance experience needed. If you can hold on to something and do a small squat, you can do Barre.

Adult Barre
Our adult Barre classes are for everyone from complete beginners to seasoned gym-goers looking for something different. Expect standing leg and glute work, core work and a stretch to finish, with your coach giving easier and harder options throughout, so nobody is ever out of their depth – or under-challenged.
Mini & Me Barre – Barre with your toddler
Finding a workout you can do with a toddler in tow is tough. Mini & Me Barre on Thursdays is exactly that: you get a full Barre class while your little one plays safely in the dedicated play area on the other side of the studio. You're in the same room the whole time, so there's no drop-off, no childcare to arrange and no guilt. It's part of a full family fitness journey at Z that runs from Baby & Me right through to training with your teenager.
Who is Barre for?
- Complete beginners
- Parents with toddlers (Mini & Me)
- Mums graduating from Baby & Me
- Anyone who wants strength without impact
- Runners and HIIT fans needing balance
- Adults over 50 looking to stay strong
Barre after having a baby
Because Barre is low impact and core-focused, it's a popular next step for mums who've completed our Baby & Me postnatal programme. Once your GP is happy for you to exercise and you've rebuilt your foundations, Barre helps you build lean strength through the legs, glutes and core without jumping – ideal while the pelvic floor is still recovering. Tell your coach about your birth and how you're feeling and they'll adapt the class for you.
Barre vs Pilates vs HIIT
Think of them as three tools. Pilates is control and mobility on the mat. HIIT is heart rate and calorie burn. Barre sits between the two: standing strength work with a Pilates-style core, plenty of music and energy, and no impact. Lots of our members mix all three across the week.
"They have saved my sanity, entertained my baby and helped me rebuild strength all at the same time, plus we've made Mum friends. Now it's time to graduate to Mini-and-Me!"

Barre FAQs
Do I need dance experience for Barre?
No. Barre borrows a few positions from ballet, but there's no choreography and no dance experience needed. If you can hold on to a chair and do a small squat, you can do Barre.
Is Barre a good workout?
Yes – it's low impact but high effort. The small, high-rep movements create a deep burn in the legs, glutes and core, and most people feel stronger and more toned within a few weeks.
Can I bring my toddler to Barre?
Yes. Our Thursday Mini & Me Barre class is designed for parents with toddlers – your little one plays safely in the dedicated play area on the other side of the studio while you work out.
What should I wear to Barre?
Leggings and a comfortable top. Barre is done barefoot or in grip socks. Bring a water bottle.
Is Barre suitable after having a baby?
Barre is low impact, so it's a popular next step after the Baby & Me postnatal programme, once your GP is happy for you to exercise. Tell your coach about your recovery and they'll adapt the class.
How much does Barre cost at Z?
Classes start from £8 a session. Pay as you go with class credits, buy a bundle, or take a flexible unlimited monthly membership.
Is there a lift to the studio?
The studio is upstairs and there's no lift, but a member of the team is always on hand to help, and there's a buggy park downstairs by reception.
